The Civil War of the United States of America, wow!
Can you just imagine for a moment what it would be like to be at war with other Americans? Think about it, it's not like fighting for gun rights or chasing peta members with bloody carcases. We are talking all out war!
I find it hard to believe that we have this kind of history in our own country. There are so many myths about why it was fought but we all know the truth was simply about the industrial revolution even though there were many other issues in play.
I, myself am not a big buff of the civil war but it is a part of history and the relics are amazing. When I am in an area that may have potential to give up a little history I look around, ya never know.
There are ways to get info for hunting war relics but it all comes down to one thing. RESEARCH BABY! Ya gotta hit the books. Find old maps and talk to the old timers that may remember a story that grandpa told them.
I have some cd's with old maps on them that I use to find the routes that were most likely used when troops moved. I plan to post the maps if I can get permission.
Campsites
Remember when searching for war relics that not only did they lose things at battle sites but also at campsites. Again research! When you know a battle location and get an idea about the route they would have used then it's not too hard to figure out where they may have camped after leaving the area.
On a good day foot soldiers could only move about 20 miles but after battle, carrying wounded, tired and hungry it is likely they would camp much closer to the battle site. So get off your butt and go for a hike. In many cases the route that was used is a road now. Go for a hike and look around you might just find a good place to look. Again research is a must. If you can find farms that were in use at the time there could be remains of an old structure. Don't forget the metal detector and don't forget to get permission before searching!
Hospitals
No, not today's hospitals. There were many places that would be set up as temporary hospitals along the path but there were permanent places as well. Research!
Train Depots
Any time it was possible to move troops by train they took advantage of it. Many small towns along the tracks had depots that no longer exist today. In most cases during the war that is also where you will find the hospitals.
Like I said before though, it all comes down to one thing. RESEARCH!!!! Ya gotta hit the books!
